Outdoor advertising in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania: what businesses should consider
2 min readAdvertising

Outdoor advertising is one of the few channels a business cannot skip past, which is exactly why it is worth planning properly. It is also unforgiving: a board in the wrong place, or with the wrong amount of text on it, cannot be edited once it is up.
Location matters more than size
- What is the traffic doing at that point: moving quickly, stopped at a junction, or crawling in a queue? Stopped traffic gives you far more reading time.
- Which direction is the site viewed from, and is the approach angle oblique enough to foreshorten the artwork?
- What else is around it? A board surrounded by other boards competes for the same glance.
- Is it lit at night, and does the audience pass in the evening? Many commuter routes peak in the dark.
- Is anything likely to block it later: trees, new construction, streetlight poles, a parked bus?
Design for the distance it will be read from
The single most useful habit in outdoor work is to reduce the copy until only the message remains. A brand name, one line, and where to find you. Contact details, a list of services and three competing messages will not be read, so the space they occupy is wasted.
Permits, site owners and installation
Outdoor advertising usually involves three separate agreements: with the site owner, with whoever approves signage in the relevant municipality, and with the fabricator who installs it. Questions worth settling early include who holds the approval, how long the site is guaranteed for, what happens if the structure needs repair, and who removes the artwork at the end. Clearing these before the campaign schedule is set prevents the most common cause of a late launch.
Materials and weather
Sun, wind and rain decide whether a print still looks right after three months. Coastal and open sites need materials and inks specified for prolonged exposure, and fixings that hold in wind load. A specification that saves money on installation day often costs the whole print again sooner than expected.
How to judge whether it worked
- Agree the objective before booking: recognition in a specific area, a launch announced in a city, footfall at one branch, or support for a campaign running elsewhere.
- Give the board a way to be attributed: a dedicated number, a short link, a QR code, or a line that only appears on the outdoor artwork.
- Photograph the installation and revisit it later in the campaign, so you know what condition the artwork was actually in while people were seeing it.
Outdoor is not a channel to buy because everyone else does. Bought against a clear objective and a properly viewed site, it remains one of the most efficient ways to become familiar in a place.
