Outdoor advertising

Outdoor works at a completely different reading speed from everything else. A passer-by gives an advert a few seconds at most, so the craft is in what can be understood from a moving vehicle and what has to be left out.

Businesses that need mass local visibility: launches, route and estate presence, and campaigns where the audience is on the move.

How we work through outdoor advertising

Legibility at speed and distance

The most common outdoor mistake is treating a billboard as a poster: too many words, too much detail, a logo small enough to need study. We design for the distance it will be read from and proof it at actual size before anything is printed.

  • Few words, large type and high contrast
  • Brand marks sized to be recognised, not just present
  • A check at real viewing distance before production

The site decides the artwork

Two billboards of the same size are not the same canvas. Direction of approach, illumination, obstructions such as trees or streetlights, and the clutter around the site all change how a design performs, so the layout is adjusted per location rather than reused straight across.

  • Approach direction and viewing distance recorded per site
  • Day, night and backlit conditions considered
  • Artwork adapted to orientation and aspect ratio

Production, installation and confirmation

Outdoor relies on physical execution as much as design. We specify materials and finishes, coordinate fabrication and installation, and confirm with photographs once the structure is up, so you know what is actually on the wall.

What you receive

  • Site and format recommendation with viewing notes
  • Artwork produced for each individual site
  • Material, print and finish specification
  • Production and installation coordination
  • Support with the documentation approvals usually require
  • Photographs confirming the installation

Questions we are often asked

  • Do you handle municipal permits for signage?

Approval for outdoor advertising is normally the advertiser's responsibility, held with the site owner. We prepare the specifications, artwork files and documentation that these processes usually ask for, and coordinate with the site owner and fabricator so it does not delay the campaign.

  • Can the same artwork run on every billboard?

Rarely well. Each site is seen from a particular direction, at a particular distance, often at a particular time of day. We keep the message and the look identical but adjust the layout so it works where it is going.

  • How long does installation take?

It depends on the structure, the materials and the approvals involved. We agree the schedule with the fabricator at the start and put those lead times into the campaign plan, rather than discovering them a week before launch.
